I was always told to pay more attention to my surroundings. Given how quiet my street usually was, I didn’t see the problem of wearing my headphones down to the mailbox. I was enjoying a nostalgia trip, listening to songs from Thumbelina as I had been working on making sure Kathleen’s Ever After mystery was ready to go. I opened the mailbox, stuffed with mail as days usually go by before a mail check since it’s quite a walk, let me tell you. I pulled out a fancy-looking envelope.
“What’s this?”
The nosy part of me took over, and I flipped over the letter to see my name on the front. It’s to me? I pulled open the back and found a note inviting me to a dance. Um, whoever sent this does know I can’t dance…and why would they want a lowly editor at their party?
I started back towards my home, examining the letter further when a figure stepped into my path and grabbed my arm. I screamed, but a hand came up and covered my mouth to mute the sound. My gaze drifted over the stranger’s shoulder to see familiar and not-so-familiar faces behind them.
Hesitantly, the stranger removed his hand from covering my mouth. “Kathleen? Nancy? Joanne?” I looked between the three of them, utterly confused. “How did you get here?” They exchanged a look and shrugged.
“Okaaay. Who are they?” I pointed at the two three unfamiliar people.
Kathleen gestured to the group. “They’re our characters! I think they’re escorting us on author, or in your case, editor, round-up before taking us to the dance from the invitation.”
“You just followed them?” Considering the amount of crime shows I watch, I felt this was a valid question.
“You don’t understand. There’s just something about them that draw you in. Plus, we created them. There’s no reason not to trust them,” Joanne chimed in.
“Fair point.”
Nancy spoke up next. “Seems like we’re off to the next person too! I can’t wait to see who joins us next!”
The characters had started walking away, and sure enough, I felt an internal pull. It was like I had to see where they were going and what waited for us at the end. I wandered behind the group, feeling a little out of place since I’m just an editor, but they quickly included me in the conversation, and in no time, we had arrived in an unfamiliar place.
“I don’t recognize where we’re at. Does anyone know who we’re visiting next?”
We all looked at each other. Nope. Looks it it’s a surprise for all of us.
The road smoothed out and the air grew colder. “I hope we get there soon. It’s cold out here! I should have worn a robe like you, Kathleen! That looks really warm!”
“It is!” Kathleen laughed.
The characters in front of us stopped, and we all hit the brakes to avoid ploughing into the back of them. They knocked on the door, and it opened to reveal…
