I find myself standing outside a theater, a paper with the address in my hand. I had received it in the mail, maybe it was Edwina’s writing? I sneak inside, the music filling the space. The repeated sound of footsteps echoes throughout the space. Hm, there must be rehearsals today. The big question invading my thoughts is written on the back of the paper. What’s behind the curtain? Edwina wasn’t able to give me the answer, so now I must look for myself. I tiptoe along the side of the hall, my footsteps as light as I can make them. I’m technically not supposed to be here, so I don’t really fancy getting caught. I watch the people mill around on the stage. What production is this? I slip out the door on the side and make my way towards the backstage wings. The big red curtain separates me from the answer I so desperately seek. I tentatively reach out, getting ready to pull back the curtain and find out what lies behind it. A hand comes down on my shoulder, making me jump out of my skin.
“Ma’am, you’re not allowed to be here,” the owner of the hand says.
I turn to face him, and the face of the security guard looks angry. I hold out the paper to him.
“I was given this paper with the instructions to come to this address…”
He looks down at the paper before closing his eyes and pinching the bridge of his nose. “You have the wrong address. This is the east side, but you need the west side.”
I look down at the paper in my hand, then back up at him, not meeting his eyes and flushed with embarrassment. “Oh…well, I’ll be out of your hair then.”
I leave the theater, disappointed at not being able to find out what’s behind the curtain. Maybe Rebekah Jones will have a better go of it tomorrow…
